EVO Civic Evolution History
EVO 4 - October 1999
01/10/1999 I finally got enough time to do some car stuff! Went out today and got a blue slip ... WOOHOO!!!! ... now I can get it registered
03/10/1999 I think it's about time I got the good engine up and running. Did a bit of cleaning up, then tried out the sandblaster on the pistons. They came up looking as good as new (probably because they practically are.)
05/10/1999 WOOHOO!!!!!! ... It's registered!!!!!!
09/10/1999 I gave the block a coat of clearcoat ... it looks good. Picked up an engine stand. Also picked up the rocker arms that had been getting reconditioned. The faces were ground off then welded up with stellite and reshaped. They are now supposed to last forever. I had to send the cam back as they had forgotten to repair the keyway where it was slightly damaged. The lobes were all ok, just needing a light surfacing to get them nice and smooth.
16/10/1999 Cleaned the block some more. Cleaned the bearing cage. Cleaned the crank and gave the journals a going over with 1200 wet or dry to give them a bit of a polish.
17/10/1999 Gapped the rings, gave the block and crank another wash (can never be too clean). Cleaned and installed the main bearings. Dropped the crank in ... seems to spin nice and freely. Siliconed the crank oil seals to the block.
30/10/1999 Bolted on the crank bearing cage. The webbing between the bearing caps had to be ground away a little to give clearance for the conrods (EN1 crank has a longer stroke than the standard EB2.) Put the rings onto the pistons (didn't break any :).) Cleaned up the big end bearings. Installed the pistons (didn't break any rings :).) With the crank bolted in and the pistons in place the crank can be rotated so it's not looking too bad. Pulled apart and cleaned the oil pump (EN1 as it is a little bigger and has a longer pickup to get down into the slightly deeper EN1 sump.) Reassembled and fitted the oil pump. It's cleaner than it looks in this picture (the light wasn't too good for taking pics) Large Pic. Cleaned the sump. I found that the EN1 sump had been rubbing slightly on the center engine mount (EN1 uses a different center mount.) A couple of thumps with a hammer and it looks like it has the clearance it needs.
31/10/1999 Bolted on the sump (hopefully it doesn't leak!) Bolted on the water pump (EN1) and left-hand engine mount bracket. Cleaned up and slid on the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Bolted on the fancy Mugen timing belt tensioner and stuck in a new timing belt Large Pic. Cleaned up and bolted on the timing belt cover. I'm using an EN1 cover, even though it is an EB2 block, as I have the EN1 cover and it's almost new ... also has my nice timing scale glued to itLarge Pic. There are a few differences between the EB cover and the EN cover but nothing to worry about as all the mounting holes line up and it fits better over the EN1 water pump anyway. Applied a little black paint to the sump to cover up some scratches.
