Did a bit on the blue car today. Removed; radiator support panel, front seat mounts, sound deadening from the front floor, battery bracket, various superfluous brackets and tabs (every bit of weight saved is important, especially when you stick 70 or 80 kg of steel roll cage in), wiring loom and a few other bits and pieces. |
| 06/01/1999 |
Started making front seat mounts. |
| 09/01/1999 |
Started strengthening the roll cage mounting points. Welded plates on where the bottoms of the front legs and the main hoop attach. |
| 10/01/1999 |
Welded in passenger seat mounts. |
| 11/01/1999 |
Went to Bond Roll Bars and got them to bend a new windscreen bar as the first one they made was bent at the wrong angle. Also dropped into SPV and got a new clutch plate. It seems that the Mugen clutch was actually made by AP Racing in England and the clutch plate is a standard size and simple to replace (but not cheap!) I just have to drill out the rivets that hold the center to the old plate and rivet it to the new one. |
| 13/01/1999 |
Made the cross pieces for the driver's side seat mounts. |
| 16/01/1999 |
Cut out and replaced a large rusty section in the floor. Started installing driver's side seat mounts. |
| 17/01/1999 |
Finished welding in seat mounts and did a bit more seam welding . Removed the windscreen (I think it's about time I found out how to remove a windscreen without breaking the damn thing &*#&!@). Then started looking at the roll cage: got the main hoop to fit, then started looking at the front legs and found Bond Roll Bars had made them the wrong shape !@$#!@. Did a bit more cleaning and seam welding till the angle grinder packed up #$$%^%$@... |
| 18/01/1999 |
Took a quick trip out to Tooltech to get a new angle grinder. |
| 20/01/1999 |
Went to Bond Roll Bars to collect two 7m lengths of 38mm steel tubing and to drop off the template so they could rebend the front legs. |
| 21/01/1999 |
Back to BRB to collect the new front cage legs - they look a lot better this time. They must be getting sick of seeing me by now... |
| 23/01/1999 |
With the aid of a hammer, angle grinder and oxy torch I finally got the front legs of the roll cage to fit. |
| 26/01/1999 |
More work on the roll cage. Started on the bits to tie the front struts to the front cage legs. Cut a hole in the body just behind the top strut mount on the passenger's side and fed a length of pipe down and back to meet up with the cage. After much stuffing around I got it the right length and angle and welded it to the leg (off the car so I could get a good weld right round). Also welded gussets onto the legs where they join the main hoop. Finally cut a hole in the driver's side for the front strut tie but didn't get around to making it. |
| 30/01/1999 |
Made front strut tie piece for the driver's side. Made the side intrusion bars. Also made and welded on some gussets that join the front legs to the intrusion bars. |
| 31/01/1999 |
Welded the intrusion bars to the legs . Made some more ties that join to the legs and pass though the vent holes to the front struts. Welded the Main hoop, front legs and intrusion bars in . |
